Breaking Up Requires Paperwork
I dreamed that Anthony and I were working together (in the dream, he did what Jay does). We were having lunch in the cafeteria, when he got this weird look on his face. He turned his head slightly and froze.
"What's wrong? Are you okay?"
"How can I be okay when someone I care about just kissed another man?" I could feel my mouth drop open and I looked past him towards the table behind him and to the left a little. There was a very pretty woman we worked with sitting there, and she was very cozy with her companion.
"What?" I asked him slowly. "Are you saying that you are in love with that woman?" He didn't say anything, just looked miserable.
I got to my feet and threw what was left of my lunch at him. "You bastard!" I screamed at him, tears coming to my eyes. "How could you?"
"Lisa, I'm sorry. It just- It didn't mean anything at first."
"Oh, that makes me feel so much better that you are a cheating bastard!"
I stormed out of the cafeteria and found myself in an office. Anthony was already sitting at the desk, and he didn't look at me. A tiny, wizened man stood behind the desk, looking at me. I could feel my eyes burning: I was exhausted, like I hadn't slept in days. I took the seat next to Anthony, but I refused to look at him.
"Okay, now that we are both here, I have the paperwork for you," the man said. He pulled out some forms and handed them to each of us. The first one read:
Application of Approval of Break Up. There was also
Dissolving of Co-Habitation Agreement, and
Provincial Appeal to Become Single.
"What are all these?" I asked, as I began filling out the first form.
"Well, as you know, singles far outweigh happy couples, and we already exceed the maximum allowed singles in New Brunswick. You have to apply for approval to break up."
I never found out if we were approved or not, I woke up.
